The ETC Program at Manassas Presbyterian Church welcomes children from 3 years of age through kindergarten.  We believe that your child is a special gift from God, and we want to provide an environment that helps each child feel comfortable, happy, loved, and secure.

ETC Coordinator:  Hillary Smith (703) 330-6772

Children learn by doing, by trying and by watching us and doing what we do.  Children learn through their senses:  touch, taste, sight, smell, and hearing.

The beauty of preparing a child to participate in worship is that it helps the preparer learn to worship in new and exciting ways.  Worship, when seen through the eyes and ears, the hands and nose of a child, has mystery and power.  It is full of surprises and anticipation.  The best way for children to learn how to worship and participate in the service is to actually do it.

With that said, our youngest children are probably not quite equipped to handle an entire worship service.  Children ages 3 through kindergarten are invited to participate in the Extended Time for Children (ETC) program. We encourage families to keep the children in the worship service until after the "Time with Children" portion of the worship service and then escort them to room 13 for ETC.

The ETC is staffed by loving and responsible parents and volunteers who regularly attend Manassas Presbyterian Church.  This program also welcomes middle and high school youth to volunteer and assist the adults with the daily activities.

It is the policy of the church that every adult who works with children be familiar with our Child Protection Policy (CPP).  (A copy will of this policy can be found in the church office.) If your child uses the ETC program, we ask you to share in the responsibility of staffing the ETC program. Please contact Hillary Smith to get on the schedule.

Child Protection Policy

Before anyone can be scheduled to volunteer in the ETC or any other program working with children and youth at MPC, they must complete the "Children and Youth Work Application". Once the application has been completed and processed by the Christian Education (CE) Ministry Team, the individual will be eligible to be scheduled as a volunteer in the ETC and other children/youth programs at MPC. Please contact the CE Office to get this paperwork.

Good Health Guidelines

Young children are very susceptible to colds, flu, and other diseases.  We want to help eliminate these concerns as much as possible,  so we ask parents to keep your child at home when you observe the following:

  • Fever
  • Discharge in or around the eyes
  • Green or yellow runny nose
  • Excessive coughing
  • Diarrhea/vomiting
  • Questionable rash
  • Any communicable disease

If your child becomes ill while in the ETC, you will be notified promptly.

For your child's protection, we ask our caregivers to follow these same guidelines.

  • A snack, such as graham crackers or animal cookies will be provided along with water and juice.
  • If your child has a food allergy or a special need related to food, please notify the ETC caregivers verbally and in writing on the sign-in sheet.

Check-in Guidelines

In order for us to provide safe and loving care for your child, please:

  • Escort your child to the ETC room following the "Time with Children" portion of the worship service.
  • Please sign in your child on the sheet provided.
  • Pick up your child(ren) promptly after the worship service and accompany them to fellowship in the narthex.

Caregiver Procedure/Guidelines

  • Caregivers may not be alone with a child at any time.
  • There should be at least two adults present in the ETC at all time.
  • Physical contact must be age-appropriate.
  • Doors must always remain unlocked, but shut.
  • Caregivers should always wear a nametag.

Our goal is to provide a secure and happy environment for you and your child.  If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please contact Hillary Smith.

Thank you for allowing Manassas Presbyterian Church to participate with you in the important task of the spiritual nurture of your children.
